Bexar County Moves Forward With Bent Canyon Road Extension Near Helotes

Bexar County has purchased approximately 1.5 acres near Davis Ranch for a planned extension of Bent Canyon Road, moving forward with a project intended to provide another route through one of the fastest-growing areas near Helotes.

The proposed connection would extend Bent Canyon Road to FM 1560. The road currently dead-ends in separate locations, limiting drivers’ options as development continues around Davis Ranch, Silver Canyon, and the surrounding Northwest Side.

County officials hope the new connection will reduce congestion and ease pressure on nearby residential streets that have increasingly been used as shortcuts.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO HELOTES

Traffic associated with development outside the Helotes city limits has created concerns for residents on both sides of the municipal boundary.

One of the affected areas is the Beverly Hills neighborhood, where residents have experienced increased cut-through traffic following the development of Davis Ranch.

The City of Helotes responded by restricting through traffic in the neighborhood. Signs warn that drivers who do not live in the area may be ticketed for using the streets as a shortcut.

The City has also used Helotes police patrols to monitor the neighborhood and enforce the restriction, reinforcing that the streets are not intended to serve as a through route for drivers outside the area.

Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez said his office heard complaints from residents outside the Helotes boundary who lost access to that route. Attempts to change the restriction were unsuccessful, leading county officials to pursue another solution.

The Bent Canyon extension could provide those drivers with a legal alternative without directing additional traffic through Beverly Hills.

PROJECT COST AND TIMELINE

Bexar County allocated approximately $4.25 million for the project in its 2024 budget.

With the land purchase now complete, construction is expected to begin in early 2027. County officials estimate the work will take approximately six months, with the goal of completing the connection by fall 2027.

The exact construction schedule could change as engineering, bidding, utility work, and other preparations continue.

GROWTH CONTINUES OUTSIDE HELOTES

The project also highlights a broader challenge facing Northwest Bexar County.

New subdivisions continue to bring more homes and vehicles to areas near Helotes, but Bexar County does not have the same land-use and zoning authority available to incorporated cities.

That means county leaders have fewer tools to control where development occurs. Transportation planning and road construction become some of the primary ways the county can respond once growth begins affecting existing neighborhoods.

WHAT DRIVERS SHOULD EXPECT

The extension will not provide immediate relief. Construction is still expected to be more than a year away, and additional details about closures or construction-related traffic have not been announced.

Once completed, however, the connection could give residents near Davis Ranch and Silver Canyon another way to reach FM 1560 while reducing the demand for neighborhood shortcuts.

Helotes Life will continue following the project as design plans, construction schedules, and traffic information become available.
